How to Fix a Corrupted HP Laptop BIOS with a USB Recovery Drive
Creating a BIOS recovery USB drive is a vital troubleshooting step if your HP notebook is experiencing startup issues or BIOS corruption. To begin you must first locate the specific product number of the affected device which is typically found on a label on the bottom of the laptop or on its original packaging. Using a secondary functional computer insert a blank USB flash drive into an available port. It is crucial to note that if you are using an Intel based platform you should avoid using a USB Type C flash drive as these are often incompatible with the crisis recovery process.
Once your hardware is ready navigate to the HP Customer Support Software and Driver Downloads page on the working computer. Search for your specific notebook model using the product number you found earlier and locate the "BIOS" category in the driver list. Download the appropriate BIOS update file ensuring the version details match your computer's specifications to prevent compatibility errors. Run the downloaded installer and follow the on screen prompts accepting the license agreement until you reach the setup options.
In the installation wizard select the option labeled "Create Recovery USB flash drive" rather than updating the current device. Choose your inserted USB drive as the destination and click "Next" to allow the software to copy the necessary BIOS files. Once the process is complete click "Finish" and safely eject the USB drive from the secondary computer.
To perform the recovery power off the malfunctioning HP notebook completely and wait for 5 to 10 seconds. Connect the AC adapter to the laptop to ensure a stable power source during the update and insert the recovery USB drive into an available port. Press and hold the Windows + B keys simultaneously then press and hold the Power button. On some specific models you may need to use the Windows + V combination instead.
After holding all keys for two to three seconds release only the Power button while continuing to hold the Windows + B keys. You may hear a series of beeps indicating the system is responding. The HP BIOS Update screen should eventually appear prompting you to follow on screen instructions to complete the recovery. If this screen does not appear it is possible your hard drive has an issue or the computer does not support this specific recovery function in which case you should contact HP Support.
